Where My Soul Meets My Heart: Art Experiences from Coast to Coast

In 2021, I had the incredible opportunity to return to my hometown, New York City, where I immersed myself in the vibrant world of art as an art dealer for a prominent art collector. This experience not only transformed my understanding of the art market but also deepened my passion for creativity and aesthetics.

From the moment I stepped into the bustling galleries and auction houses, I was absolutely floored by the diversity of artwork surrounding me. Each piece told a story, evoking emotions and memories that transported me into the minds of the artists. I had the privilege of being in the presence of masterworks, from contemporary pieces that challenged conventional ideas to classical art that encapsulated the essence of history. Handling these artworks was a profound experience, allowing me to appreciate their physical presence and the meticulous craftsmanship behind them.

A critical aspect of my role involved authenticating artwork, a process essential for establishing the value and legitimacy of each piece. I frequently referenced catalogs raisonnés, which are comprehensive compilations of an artist's works, to verify the authenticity of specific pieces. Additionally, examining the provenance—the documented history of ownership—provided valuable insights into an artwork's background. Certificates of authenticity were also vital, serving as official documentation that confirms a piece's legitimacy and details its history. This meticulous process of authentication not only reinforced my knowledge of art but also deepened my appreciation for the stories behind each work.

My background as a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology with a major in Fine Arts played a critical role in my research. The art history courses I took equipped me with a solid foundation, enabling me to analyze artworks and understand their historical context. This knowledge was invaluable as I navigated the art market and engaged with collectors and artists.

Participating in high-stakes art auctions at renowned establishments like Christie's, Bonham's, and Doyle's was nothing short of exhilarating. Each auction was a blend of strategy, excitement, and artistry. I learned the intricacies of bidding, the value of pieces, and how to engage with other collectors and dealers. It was a fast-paced environment where every decision counted, and I quickly realized how important research and preparation were in this competitive landscape.

Throughout this journey, I honed my research skills, diving deep into the history and provenance of various artworks. Understanding the context and significance of a piece enriched my appreciation and allowed me to convey its story to potential buyers. This process not only equipped me with the knowledge to navigate the art market but also enhanced my interpersonal skills. I engaged with a diverse array of individuals, from artists and collectors to curators and critics, each interaction deepening my understanding of their perspectives on art.

While my soul is in New York City, my heart is here in the Pacific Northwest. I don't think I could ever truly move away for good. Returning to the West Coast was bittersweet, as I left behind the bustling art scene of New York. However, my passion for art remains unwavering. I continue to assist my art collector friend in dealing artworks here on the West Coast, applying the skills and insights I gained in New York. The experience ignited a renewed love for art within me, and I am grateful for the connections I made and the lessons I learned.

My time as an art dealer in New York City was more than just a job; it was a transformative journey that shaped my artistic vision and reinforced my commitment to the art world. As I continue to explore and create through my photography, I carry the invaluable experiences from that year with me, ever inspired by the beauty and diversity of art in all its forms.
